Challenge
Rossano Ferretti are a luxury Italian haircare brand who have a global web presence selling products through their e-commerce stores. In June 2024 they experienced a large influx of transactions through their checkout at points reaching close to a thousand per minute. It became clear these were automated bot attacks which were attempting to validate stolen credit card numbers as still being active. Alongside this, the scale of the attacks were straining the website infrastructure and Google’s reCAPTCHA was being bypassed by bots. Working with their agency, ALT Agency, Rossano Ferretti engaged with adCAPTCHA when looking for the solution to resolve this issue.
Solution
Working together adCAPTCHA was implemented onto their website within two hours. Immediately the scale of the attacks was clear and adCAPTCHA was blocking bots at rates of five to six hundred a minute. Within a day the bots stopped coming whilst the hacker evaluate why they were being beaten. Two weeks later the bots returned at scales reaching a thousand per minute in an attempt to overwhelm the solution by using sheer volume. These attacks again were beaten back and ceased to return. The initial implementation was on their US site as this was where the attacks were occurring. The hacker then shifted their attention to other international versions of the site. Immediately adCAPTCHA was rolled out to all sites and these attacks were beaten back.
Impact
As of July 2024 Rossano Ferretti have seen no scale attacks and the minimal level of bots coming to the site have been beaten. Outside of being able to protect their platform and their users they now have a deterrent from future attacks as hackers will not waste money on secure sites. This is a clear example of how bots can be used for fraudulent purposes at scale on any website. Rossano Ferretti had put security measures in place however the sophistication of modern AI driven bots requires a new generation of tools to combat these threats.
